PMC’s GPON solutions certified by Broadband Forum ONU certification program

SUNNYVALE, USA: PMC-Sierra Inc. announced that its GPON products are certified by the new Broadband Forum GPON ONU Certification Program. The program is the industry’s first to verify that GPON products adhere to the ITU-T GPON standard and Broadband Forum specifications. This paves the way for interoperability, which enables service providers to cost effectively expand their high-speed broadband services. PMC’s PAS740X GPON ONT SoCs achieved full certification.

“PMC’s ONU solutions are known for their interoperability and high quality, so we were confident participating in the certification program using PMC’s ONU silicon in our OB1004 GPON Mini ONT,” Michael Kwan, CEO, Tecom. “As a CPE equipment vendor, it is important to deliver products that will work seamlessly with any OLT in the field.”

“As a recognized leader in fiber access silicon and software solutions and an active Broadband Forum member, PMC was among the first vendors to pass certification,” said Ofer Bar-Or, VP and GM of PMC’s Fiber to the Home Division. “PMC has promoted interoperability since GPON’s early days, and the establishment of the OD-247 certification program is a significant step towards building networks for superfast broadband.”

The certification program is open to GPON ONU products with Ethernet interfaces and is based on the Broadband Forum’s OD-247 test plan. It proves conformance to TR-156 using OMCI as defined in the ITU G.988, which are the most critical standards to interoperable implementations.

“This has been a notable commitment for all who have been involved in this initial wave of certification,” said Robin Mersh, CEO of Broadband Forum. “We congratulate PMC on their product’s successful bid for certification and for their continued commitment to adherence to global standards.”

PMC’s GPON ONU SoCs include an integrated GPON MAC, VoIP subsystem, embedded controller and GigaPASS bridge performing advanced classification, queuing and filtering, with wire-speed throughput at all packet sizes. Reference designs come with complete software, featuring GPON functions, QoS bridging, VoIP, SIP and OMCI. The PAS5211 four-port GPON OLT SoC for central office equipment completes PMC’s end-to-end GPON solution. Both product lines are shipping in volume and are commercially deployed worldwide.
