Dr. J.S. Sarma is new TRAI chairman!

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Dr. J.S. Sarma has joined TRAI as Chairman on 14th May 2009. Before joining TRAI, Dr. Sarma was holding the post of Member in Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal.

Dr Sarma is a well known expert of the telecom Sector and he has contributed significantly to the telecom sector during his tenure as Additional Secretary to the Government of India from November, 2003 to November, 2004, and later as Secretary to the Government of India from June 2005 to July 2006 in the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications & IT.

Born in 1948, Dr. Sarma Graduated form the Osmania University and he did M.Tech in Applied Geology form University of Sagar, Madhya Pradesh before joining the Indian Administrative Service in Andhra Pradesh Cadre in the year 1971. He is having Doctorate in Public Enterprises from the University of Paris.

Dr. Sarma had distinguished career during his stint in the Indian Administrative Service where he held various posts in the Government of Andhra Pradesh and Government of India. He served in Andhra Pradesh in the Districts of Kurnool, Prakasam, Cuddapah, Guntur, and Chittoor as Collector and District Magistrate.

He held the posts of Managing Director of the Oilseeds Growers’ Federation, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad, Commissioner of Land Reforms & Urban Land Ceilings and he was Secretary in the Department of Labour, Education and Planning. His stint in the Government of India started with his posting in Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers between 1977 and 1980.

He again joined Government of India in June 1997 as Joint Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development where he worked till October, 2002. He had also held the post of Additional Secretary in Department of Personnel & Trainings and the post of Secretary in Department of Fertilizers.
